Energy **[9:39](M. White, W. Flemons, D. Whitehead, S. Scott): Mostly instrumental; begins abruptly with a short drum solo,
followed by an alto sax when the drums fade. Sherry Scott joins in with a monologue expressing her love of energy (A higher
form of energy, no doubt). A brief shot of Supa-fly style funk then segues into aggressive free-form jazz, showcasing a trumpet
solo and a decent alto sax solo all supported by a jazzy rhythm. "Energy" clocks in over 9 minutes before the music
fades into oblivion.
"Energy" would seem at face value to be an unusual song to lead off an album for a new group trying to build
a strong foundation. But building a ground floor of jazz fans was critical in the development of EW&F. This is actually
closer to what (group fonder) Maurice White had envisioned during his time touring with Ramsey Lewis and as a staff musician
with Chess Records.
