Overall**** Spirit was considered a bit of a letdown after the major successes of the group's two previous albums "That's the Way of the World" and "Gratitude". Looking back now Spirit was actually an improvement. The uptempo music is superior (Sorry, Shining Star fans). Operatic rock to futuristic funk add to the classic moments on this album. The ballads are all excellent, and representative of the growing sophistication in EW&F's music. Of greater importance; EW&F CO-producer Charles Stepney passed away on May, 17, 1976 in the midst of recording this album. Two of the songs that appeared on "Spirit" were dedicated to Stepney, including the title track. Spirit is fiery, jazzy, epic, romantic and despite the tragedy that took place, it's still a breath of fresh air.
