Boogie Wonderland (Featuring: The Emotions)****[4:54] (M. White,
J. Lind, A. Willis): First single-release from "I Am" album. "Operatic Latin Funk" (similar to "Fantasy" from All-N-All album,
but actually harder),that's actually classified as disco? Among the best instrumental tracks ever by EW&F! Set to a 4/4
tempo. Crystalline guitars, industrious percussion (timpani's are superb), bass-lines are hastily smooth, strings glide throughout
the whole track, horns show up perfectly and the vocals are magical.
The Emotions three-part harmony is among the best vocal work of its time (The Emotions were hot coming off their giant-hit,
"Best of My Love )": Written and Produced by none other than EW&F members Maurice White and Al McKay, and as one might
expect, several other members of EW&F contributed to "Best of My Love)". White melodically croons about the vagaries of
high expectations not met (Yes "Boogie Wonderland" has a message). Philip Bailey delivers a falsetto blast that brings down
the house (Not as distinctive as what he offered on earlier EW&F albums, but better than most). This selection was widely
accepted by old and new fans. What lies underneath is exceptional.
The mostly instrumental flip-side of the 7' single is worth the price as is the 12' single of "Boogie Wonderland" and
even it's instrumental flipside has a different arrangement.
