FACES (album)***: Produced by Maurice White:
EW&F's previous
album "I AM displayed more of a commercial sound, even employing songwriters whose abiities reflected that genre, leaving
some hardcore EW&F fans wondering if their favorite group had run the well dry and even casual listeners may have thought
of EW&F as just another ordinary group. EW&F responded by releasing a two-record set of brand-new material with group
members contributing more as writers.
Uptempo sophisticated funk, authoritative and anthemic R&B that builds upon
the momentum gathered from the first two cuts starts "Faces" off strongly. The slow jams are appealing and as musically ecletic
as ever, with shades of light-rock, hints of gospel and even waltz . Moderate rock shows up in some of the uptempo material,
other uptempo cuts are Motownish with added brass. "Faces" even has enough room to include Latin influenced music.
Unfortunately,
the record buying public didn't care too much for "Faces" or it's multi-ethnic flair. Still each song stands out compared
to other music of its time.
Now more than 20 years later, "Faces" is finally beginning to receive the accolades it
richly deserved when it was released. The EW&F engine operated on all cylinders creatively when this album was recorded
and for anyone who hasn't listened to "Faces", do youself a favor. Buy it! it's worth it!
(Unfortunately, either shortly before or shortly after, longtime EW
&F guitarist Al McKay would leave the group).
